PCB Assembly

What is PCBA?

A PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) is a PCB that has been populated with electronic components. This includes resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits, and other electronic elements that enable the board to function as part of an electronic device.

What are the different types of PCBA?

There are three main types of PCBA:
· Through-Hole Technology (THT): For components that require additional strength or have higher power requirements, we offer THT assembly. This method involves inserting components through holes in the PCB and soldering them on the opposite side.
· Surface-Mount Technology (SMT): We specialize in SMT assembly such as BGA (Ball Grid Array) and QFN (Quad Flat No-lead) at our dedicated SMT facility in Shenzhen. This modern method allows for the placement of components directly onto the surface of PCBs, maximizing space and efficiency. Our automated SMT lines ensure consistent quality and rapid production times, enabling us to handle complex designs with high component density..
Mixed Technology: Our mixed technology assembly combines both SMT and THT methods, allowing us to leverage the advantages of both techniques. This flexibility ensures that we can meet the specific requirements of any project, regardless of complexity.

What are lead times for PCBA?

Lead times can vary based on factors such as component availability, complexity of the assembly. With over 16 years in the industry, Ring PCB offers a stable component supply chain and quick turnaround times for your PCBA projects no more than 10 days even for complex design.

What is the cost structure of PCBA?

Costs can vary widely depending on:
· Volume: Higher production volumes often lead to lower unit costs due to bulk discounts and improved efficiency
· PCB Complexity:Number of layers, component density, and trace width and spacing, materials of the board
· Soldering technology: Surface mount technology (SMT) is generally less expensive than through-hole technology (THT)
· Type and number of components used
· Testing and shipping

The steps involved in PCBA

1.Design: Creating the schematic and layout of the PCB.

2.Fabrication: Manufacturing the bare PCB based on the design.

3.Component Sourcing: Procuring the necessary electronic components.
4.Component Placement: The components are placed on the PCB according to the design.
5.Assembly/Soldering: The components are soldered to the PCB using a reflow soldering(suitable for SMT components), wave soldering(suitable for THT components), or hand soldering.
6.Inspection: At Ring PCB, we conduct visual inspection, automated optical inspection (AOI) and X-ray inspection to inspect the following points:
· Component Placement: Correct placement and orientation are essential for proper function.
· Solder Joints: Joints should be smooth, shiny, and free from defects.
· Circuit Continuity: All connections should be electrically sound.
· Foreign Objects: Any debris or foreign particles can cause short circuits or other issues.
· Physical Damage: Cracks, scratches, or other physical damage can affect the board's reliability.

What components does PCBA consist of?

Here are the primary electronic components of a PCBA:
ComponentFunctionExample
Integrated Circuits (ICs)Pack multiple functions into a single chipMicroprocessors, microcontrollers, memory chips
ResistorsControl the flow of currentUsed to set the gain of an amplifier
CapacitorsStore and release electrical energyUsed in power supplies and filters
InductorsUsed in circuits to filter or store energyUsed in power supplies and transformers
DiodesAllow current to flow in one direction onlyUsed in rectifiers and voltage regulators
TransistorsAct as electronic switches or amplifiersUsed in amplifiers and digital circuits
ConnectorsProvide electrical connections between the PCB and other devicesUSB connectors, HDMI connectors
SwitchesAllow manual control of electrical circuitsPower switches, push-button switches
LEDsLight-emitting diodes used for displays or indicatorsUsed in backlights, indicators, and displays
SensorsDetect physical or environmental changes and convert them into electrical signalsTemperature sensors, pressure sensors, accelerometers
Other componentsDepending on the specific application, PCBA can include a wide range of other componentsCrystals, oscillators, fuses, relays
